GENERAL CLASS INFORMATION

All teachers at Parkside Academy follow a detailed dance syllabus that was carefully written by the director Miss Pamela Dimeler and Miss Laura. We make sure each class learns specific techniques and steps in order to prepare them for the next level in our school’s progression. Most students are in each level for 2 – 3 years. Our levels are based primarily on age/grade, as you will see in the class descriptions below. Please choose a class by clicking on the black plus sign to the left.

 

Pre Elementary

PRE-ELEMENTARY

Classes for the pre-school and kindergarten ages child.  Classes are based in creative movement.

Dance with Mommy
This is a wonderful class for Mom’s and their 2 – 3 year olds. Together, you will experience the world of music and dance using props, creative movements, and simple dances. This class is not limited to just Mommy’s, as often Daddy’s, Grand Mom’s, or Grand Pop’s attend with their child. The attire for this class is pink leotard, pink tights, pink ballet skirt (optional), and pink ballet shoes for girls and comfortable clothes for Mommy. Students must be 2 by December 31st in order to participate in this class. Dance with Mommy is an excellent class to help prepare the young dancer for Kinderdance. This class does not participate in the June recitals, however on the final class in June, an informal performance is held for family and friends, followed by refreshments.
Kinderdance
Parkside Academy is well known for it’s fun-filled and educational Kinderdance classes. At this level students age 3 – 5 (pre school and kindergarten) experience an introduction to ballet and tap.  Students must be 3 by the start of classes.   Kinderdance includes 30 minutes of tap and 30 minutes of basic ballet technique through fun songs and dances. The teacher introduces a variety of props to the students to add to their creative enjoyment and education. The children at this level learn much more than just the tap and ballet steps. They are learning to follow directions, their right from left, learning how to take turns and share. They are also learning coordination, poise, and good posture. Kinderdance students participate in one of our wonderful June matinee recitals. They will do one ballet and one tap dance and participate in the finale. Also, they may participate in our special Father/Daughter dance. For class, students wear light pink leotards, pink tights, pink skirt (optional), pink ballet slippers and white tap shoes.

 

 

Elementary

ELEMENTARY

Classes for students in 1st – 6th grade.  Students typically spent two years in each level, with each level building upon the previous years.  

Elementary 1
This level is for students age 6 – 7 in the 1st and 2nd grades. Elementary 1 is a more challenging course.  It is one hour in duration with 30 minutes for tap and 30 minutes for ballet instruction. The Elementary 1 syllabus includes more complicated tap steps and ballet technique. The class will also incorporate the use of props as well as creative movement. Each class will perform a ballet and a tap dance and be in the Finale of one of the June matinee recitals. They may also select to perform in our special Father/Daughter dance as part of the recital. For this class children wear sky blue leotards, pink tights, sky blue skirt (optional), pink ballet shoes, and white tap shoes.
Elementary 2
This level is for students ages 8 – 9 in the 3rd and 4th grades. At this level the class is one and a half hours. The class is lengthened to allow for the introduction of jazz. Students will also continue their development in ballet and tap. The syllabus includes 30 minutes of ballet, 30 minutes of tap and 30 minutes of jazz. The staff at Parkside Academy are very careful to choose music and movements that are appropriate for the young child. The Elementary 2 class will perform a ballet, tap and jazz dance in one of the June matinee recitals, as well as participate in the finale. Students may also participate in the Father/Daughter dance if desired. For class children wear sky blue leotards, pink tights, sky blue skirt (optional), pink ballet shoes, white tap shoes and tan slip-on jazz shoes.
Elementary 3
This class is for children ages 10 – 11 in the 5th and 6th grades. At this level the students attend a 2 hour class each week. This class includes an hour of ballet, 30 minutes of tap, and 30 minutes of jazz. The syllabus at this level includes the mastery of all Elementary ballet, tap and jazz steps and prepares the students for our Intermediate level where the children begin to study Pointe. Children at this level participate in our evening recital, which includes a full length Ballet. Students will also perform a tap dance and a jazz dance after intermission. The following ballets are included in a five year rotation: Swan Lake, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and Cinderella. Students at this level may join the Parkside Performing Arts Company, under the direction of Miss Laura. This company allows the students to participate in the Nutcracker, attend workshops and competitions, and travel every other summer on a dance performance trip. For class, students wear a solid color leotard, pink tights, dance skirt (optional), split sole ballet shoes, black oxford tap shoes and tan slip on jazz shoes.

 

 

Upper Levels

UPPER LEVELS

Upper Levels are designed for experienced dancers in 7th grade and above. Students in Levels 1 through 3 are separated by experience and ability.  After Elementary 3, students move into Level 1. Students transferring from other studios may be asked to take a FREE placement class to determine their correct level.   Students making adequate progress will typically  spend 2 years in each level. The classes are more demanding and the teachers require good attendance in order to keep up with the physical and mental challenges. Classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Modern.  At the end of the dance year students will be evaluated by their teacher(s) and placed in the appropriate level regardless of age or grade.

Ballet
Level 1 – 3 Ballet students are required to attend a minimum of 2 ballet classes a week. Ballet classes are an hour and fifteen minutes. Students should wear a solid color leotard, pink convertible tights, ballet shirt (optional), pink split sole ballet shoes, and pink pointe shoes. Shirts, shorts and pants are NOT allowed to be worn in class. Hair should be neatly pulled back off of the face. Level 1 dancers will have a parent meeting in September to discuss purchasing pointe shoes. Pointe shoes should not be purchased prior to this meeting. Level 2 and 3 students may purchase their pointe shoes prior to the start of the dance year. All pointe shoes must be checked by Miss Laura prior to sewing them. Students participate in our full length ballet during the evening June recital. The following ballets are included in a five year rotation: Swan Lake, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and Cinderella.
Tap
Tap class is 45 – 60 minutes and meets once a week. Students will study a variety of styles including Broadway and Rhythm Tap. Students may wear any solid color leotard, pink or suntan tights, black dance shorts or pants, and black oxford tap shoes. Each class will perform in the June evening recital.
Jazz
Jazz class is 45 – 60 minutes and meets once a week. Students study a variety of different jazz styles from Broadway to Hip-Hop. Students may wear any solid color leotard, pink or suntan tights, black dance shorts or pants, and tan slip-on jazz shoes. Each class will perform in the June evening recital.
Modern
Modern class is 45 – 60 minutes and meets once a week. Students study a wide variety of movements and styles including lyrical and contemporary. Students may wear any solid color leotard, pink or suntan tights (footless or convertible), black dance shorts or pants. Students dance in bare feet or flesh colored foot undeez. Each class will perform in the June evening recital.

ADDITIONAL CLASSES

Parkside Academy offers a wide variety of classes outside of just ballet, tap, jazz, and modern.

Irish
This class teaches basic Irish steps and Ceili group dances to fun and lively Irish music. There are 2 levels and children are placed in the appropriate level based on their experience. Each class meets once a week for 45 minutes. Each class will perform one dance and be in the Finale of one of the June matinee recitals. Students may also participate in our special Father/Daughter dance as part of the recital. This class is currently not offered in 2015.
Hip-Hop
Various styles will be introduced in a fun and energetic setting.  All music is carefully monitored for appropriateness. There are three age levels offered: Hip Hop 1 (Grades 1-4), Hip Hop 2 (Grades 5-8), and Hip Hop 3 (Grades 9-12). Students should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers.
Teacher's Course
Students who are interested in teaching dance and are in the 9th grade or above may take the Dance Teacher’s Course. This course was designed by Miss Pamela and Miss Laura and is an excellent learning experience for the student. It is a 3 year course that includes one lecture class and assisting in each level of dance from Kinderdance through Level 1 during the three years. The student teacher is given the opportunity to teach by themselves and choreograph many dances for the classes. The Student Teachers are guided under the direction of Miss Laura and receive a diploma at the June evening recital.

 

 

Adults

ADULT OPEN CLASSES

Adults and teens are welcome to take part in these fun and exciting classes. Classes are for students ages 13 and up and all levels of abilities are welcome. These classes are highly recommended for teenagers who are just beginning to study dance. Each class meets once a week.

Ballet
Students should wear a solid color leotard, pink tights, ballet skirt (optional), pink split sole ballet shoes. Hair should be neatly pulled back off of the face. Participation in the June recital is optional and will be discussed in class in November.
Tap
Students should wear a solid color leotard or shirt, black shorts or dance pants, and black oxford tap shoes. Each class will perform a dance in the June evening recital. Participation in the June recital is optional and will be discussed in class in November.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Parkside Academy offers private 30 minute lessons to children and adults. Instruction is offered in Dance, Voice, Piano, and Harp. Class time is arranged individually with the instructor. We hold a winter and a spring music recital for our students to share their musical talents with their families and friends.
